Error 0199: System security - Security password retry count exceeded - ThinkCentre M90, M90p, ThinkServer TS200v, ThinkStation E20

Symptom
The system BIOS is 5JKT47A or older the user may see the following error with a hard drive password is setup in BIOS and the user types the password wrong 3 times:
Maximum number of Hard Disk Password attempts has been exceeded. System must be powered off before the hard disk drive can be unlocked.
The user follows the above instruction, then powers off the system then powers back on.
POST Error 0199 with 2 beeps.
Error 0199: System Security - Security password retry count exceeded
Press F1 to enter Setup
Affected configurations
Any of the following systems but not limited to the following systems:
  • ThinkCentre M90 (all models)
  • ThinkCentre M90p (all models)
  • ThinkServer TS200v (all models)
  • ThinkStation E20 (all models)
    Note: The system BIOS is setup with an Administrator password and hard drive password.
    Additional Information:
    STEPS:
    1. System is configured default settings (Load Optimal Defaults)
    2. Power on system > F1 for BIOS Setup Utility
    3. Set Administrator Password [ pap ]
    4. Set Hard Disk Password Hard Disk Password > SATA Drive 0 Password > [User + Master] User Hard Disk Password [ userhdp ] Master Hard Disk Password [ masterhdp ]
    5. Exit > Save Changes and Exit
    6. Power off system
    7. Power on system.
    You will see the below message:
    System Security: Hard Disk Password Required
    Enter SATA Drive 0 User Password and Press <Enter>:
    • Press ESC to continue with hard disk drive locked
    • Press F1 to switch between Master Password and User Password
    Type an invalid password. You will see the below message:
    Invalid Password
    Enter SATA Drive 0 User Password and Press <Enter>:
    Type an invalid password. You will see the same message.

    Invalid Password
    Enter SATA Drive 0 User Password and Press <Enter>:
    Type an invalid password. You will see another message.
    Maximum number of Hard Disk Password attempts has been exceeded. System must be powered off before the hard disk drive can be unlocked.

    1. Power off system then back on. You will hear 2 beeps, then see the ThinkCentre POST logo and the following:

    SATA 2: None
    Error 0199: System security-Security password retry count exceeded.
    Press F1 to enter Setup
    Solution
    Update the system BIOS to 5JKT48A or newer. The 0199 error can now be cleared either by entering the correct hard drive password or entering the Administrator password to enter BIOS, F10 save and exit.
